Black History Month: Slave Research, Locating Ancestors During Slavery

Saturday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m.

John F. Germany Public Library, 900 N. Ashley
Drive in Tampa

FREE

African‐American research specialist Marjorie Sholes will take participants step‐by‐step through the process she used to trace one of her own ancestors, showing the tips and tricks she discovered along the way. In particular, she’ll focus on how to identify slave owners to unlock the history of slave ancestors. Participants will also learn what resources are available with tools such as those on Ancestry.com and elsewhere to aid in their research. Sholes is one of the foremost authorities on African‐American genealogical research in America; she even helped retired football player Emmitt Smith find his slave ancestors on the TV show Who Do You Think You Are. Slave Research is the second of two programs she is presenting on Feb.16. Come to the library for one or both presentations.

For adults. Participants must register in advance at the Reference Desk of the Florida History and Genealogy Library or by calling 813‐273‐3652. Limit of 100 participants.

Funded by the Friends of the John F. Germany Public Library. For more information about this and other FREE programs @ your library®, call 813‐273‐3652 or visit www.hcplc.org.
