    Susan Greenbaum, Ph.D., Professor of Anthropology at USF, author of More Than Black: Afro-Cubans in Tampa which has a section on baseball and Negro Leagues players. History shows that many Cubans brought their love of the game with them around the turn of the 20th century when they moved to Tampa to work in the cigar factories, and many of the Cubans of African descent played in the Negro Leagues. Dr. Greenbaum will speak on the history of Afro-Cubans and baseball.

  • Authors Wes Singletary, Ph.D., and Susan Greenbaum, Ph.D., will serve as featured panelists to discuss the history of Negro Leagues baseball in Florida and the social issues faced by the players.

    Wes Singletary is the Chief of Personnel Management, Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. He is a Tampa native, author of two books on baseball, and is currently working on a biography of John Henry "Pop" Lloyd, a baseball hall-of-famer from the Negro League.

  • Kadir Nelson will share his experiences with visiting original fields, meeting players, and recreating the events to assist with the illustrations included in the book. Nelson will also discuss the research involved with writing the manuscript for We are the Ship. Book signing will follow.

    Nelson is an award-winning African American artist and illustrator. He is a two-time Caldecott Honor Award winner; he also won the Coretta Scott King Author Award and the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award for We Are the Ship, which tells the story of Negro League baseball from its beginnings in the 1920s through its decline after Jackie Robinson crossed over to the majors in 1947.

  • Sharon Robinson will share memories of life with her legendary father Jackie Robinson. Book signing will follow.

    Sharon Robinson, the daughter of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, is a nurse, university professor and director of educational programming for the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball. She is also the author of several books including Stealing Home: An Intimate Family Portrait by the Daughter of Jackie Robinson and Testing the Ice: a true story about Jackie Robinson.

    BLACK BASEBALL AND MUSIC IN THE
    JIM CROW ERA

    If It Ain’t Got That Swing: Black Baseball and Music in the Jim Crow Era

    A program by Negro Leagues experts Dr. Lawrence Hogan and Dr. Robert Cvornyek that will include a PowerPoint presentation and a panel discussion exploring the many connections between black music and black baseball found in the history of both genres.

    Dr. Lawrence Hogan is a senior professor of history at Union County College in New Jersey. He is an expert on the history of black baseball and his touring exhibit on the subject has traveled nationwide. Dr. Hogan is co-director of the program It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got that Swing: Black Baseball and Jazz, and author of Shades of Glory: The Negro Leagues and the Story of African-American Baseball. He presently serves as a director of Out of the Shadows, a study of the history of African Americans in baseball, sponsored by the National Baseball hall of Fame and the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball. Dr. Hogan was a consultant to the American Library Association for Pride and Passion: The African-American Baseball Experience.

    Dr. Robert Cvornyek is a Professor of History at Rhode Island College, where he specializes in Sport History. He is the curator of a traveling exhibit titled Black Grays and Colored Giants: Black Baseball in Rhode Island and is co-director of the program It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got that Swing: Black Baseball and Jazz. His most recent publications include an edited version of Effa Manley's Negro Baseball...Before Integration and Baseball in Newark. He contributed a chapter titled Redefining the Narrative: Effa Manley, Jackie Robinson, and the Integration of Baseball in Baseball in the Classroom and authored several articles on this topic. He is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research, North American Society for Sport History, and the Pop Lloyd Committee.

    The Hillsborough Literacy Council, in partnership with the Hillsborough County Health Department, will be offering a four-part Health Workshop with information and tips about staying healthy for adults with low literacy skills. The Literacy and Health Outcomes Report by the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality indicates that adults who have difficulty reading or communicating are more likely to get cancer, heart disease, and diabetes; they are hospitalized four times as much as those with higher literacy skills; and about $73 billion are spent on additional health care costs due to low health literacy skills.
