Grant Peeples at the Library!

Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2:30 p.m.

Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library, 2902 W. Bearss Avenue in Tampa

FREE

Join the "Peeples Republik" at the Library! Grant Peeples will perform his special style of acoustic folk music. There is something that distinguishes Grant from the vast, strumming herd of singer/songwriters. His songs bite and twist, turn on a phrase, dig beneath the surface of appearances. He violates the 'No Trespassing' signs, and peeks over the backyard fences of the culture. Then he picks up his guitar and lets you know what he’s seen unapologetically like a poet would anchor the 6 O’clock News. Once you listen to Grant’s songs, see his performance, the old tobacco barn in that empty field across from your Wal-Mart won’t look quite the same as it did before."

Four Seasons Author Series Presents Award-Winning Crime Writer Ace Atkins

On Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 the Friends of the Library of Tampa-Hillsborough County proudly presents critically-acclaimed, award-winning crime writer Ace Atkins and his newest book, The Ranger. This is the beginning of a thrilling new series about the Deep South, and the introduction of an unforgettable protagonist, Army Ranger Quinn Colson. The event will be held at noon at the Tampa Yacht and Country Club, 5320 Interbay Blvd., Tampa 33611.

It's been six years since Quinn Colson has been home to Tibbehah County, the remote hill country of northeast Mississippi where he grew up, a place notorious for outlaws since the Civil War. A Ranger who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, Colson is traveling home in an old Ford pickup for his uncle's funeral.

His Uncle Hamp had been the county sheriff, but the murder scene reeks of foul play. Partnering up with Lillie Virgil, the tomboy deputy that Colson has known since childhood, Colson sets out on a trail of seedy crimes and shady characters to find the real story behind his uncle's death—uncovering troubling truths about his family, his friends, and his hometown along the way.

Through highway strip clubs, bogus churches, trailer park meth labs, and the offices of crooked politicians, Atkins evokes the atmosphere of a Deep South riddled with corruption, greed, blind religious fervor, and addiction, and what happens when it’s met with the brutal but honorable justice of Quinn Colson. A gripping contemporary mystery with all the swagger and action of a classic western and the heady atmosphere of hard-boiled noir, The Ranger is the start of a brilliant new series.

The Four Seasons Author Series is presented by the Friends of the Library of Tampa-Hillsborough County, Inc. The subscription series offers four consecutive literary lunches at which guest authors are invited to speak on a variety of subjects, followed by a question and answer period, with a book signing for those who wish to purchase the featured book. Tickets are $30 for a one time event or a subscription for four consecutive luncheons is $100. Reservations are necessary to attend. To reserve your seat for the luncheon, call the Friends office at (813) 273-3616 by Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011 or e-mail fourseasonsluncheon@gmail.com.
