Community Reading

What: Hillsborough Reads Kick-Off
When: Saturday, May 7 at 11 a.m.
Where: Tampa Bay History Center, 801 Old Water St. in Tampa
FREE! and open to the public

The Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System and Tampa Bay History Center will launch Hillsborough Reads on May 7, a new partnership program designed to encourage reading in our community.

The goal of Hillsborough Reads is for our community to dedicate one month reading about Florida's past.

A Land Remembered by Patrick D. Smith is the featured Hillsborough Reads selection for May 2011. Spanning more than 100 years, A Land Remembered highlights Florida’s rich cultural heritage by following the fictional MacIvey family’s experiences through the challenging wilderness and the developing Florida landscape. With both student and adult editions, this book can be enjoyed by the entire family. A Land Remembered was recently voted Best Florida Book for the ninth year in a row by Florida Monthly.

Join us at the Tampa Bay History Center, 801 Old Water St. in downtown Tampa, on Saturday, May 7, to kick-off Hillsborough Reads. Festivities begin at 11 a.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Entertainment includes: • Florida Folksinger Frank Thomas • Florida Cracker Storyteller Judge Nelson Bailey • Pioneer activities and crafts for children • Historical re-enactors

There is an admission charge to view the Tampa Bay History Center galleries. However, in honor of Mother’s Day weekend and courtesy of Verizon, admission to the galleries is free for mothers.
