Hillsborough County Libraries Receive Award For Youth Programs

Today (April 20), the Florida Library Association (FLA) presented the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System with its 2012 Betty Davis Miller Youth Services Award for the libraries’ outstanding children’s programs; specifically, those designed for homeschooling families. The award presentation was part of the FLA’s annual conference in Orlando.

In a recognition email, the FLA wrote they were impressed with the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Libraries’ homeschool programs, and commended the library system for its great ideas to encourage other libraries to meet the growing needs of homeschool families. One of the key judging criteria was that the program could be replicated by other libraries.

"We’re so honored to receive the Betty Davis Miller Award for our homeschool programs,” said Linda Gillon, Hillsborough County’s Manager of Library Programming. “We are pleased to serve all local kids with educational and fun programs, and hope that these serve as inspiration for other library systems.”

The Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Libraries have offered a variety of programs that were aimed to assist homeschooling families, and were open to anyone who wanted to participate. Each program included a short presentation on a learning topic, followed by hands-on experiments and activities. Books on the topics were available for checkout at the end of each program, and handouts were available for follow-up at home. They held:
  • Science programs for children ages 5 to 7 and 8 to 11 covering the topics of observation, hypothesis and theory, moon and stars, gravity, properties of matter, plate tectonics, magnets, electrical circuits, robotics, and tornadoes.
  • Consumer science programs for children ages 12 and up covering the topics of money and budgeting, banking and loans, career planning, leadership, and nutrition and wellness.
These programs took place at the Bloomingdale Regional Public Library, Riverview Branch Library, Seffner-Mango Branch Library, SouthShore Regional Library and Thonotosassa Branch Library. They are currently being held at the John F. Germany Public Library.
