Hillsborough Reads: Cracker Cowboy Poet - "Tellin' It Like It Was"

  • Tuesday, May 24 at 4 p.m.

Upper Tampa Bay Regional Library, 11211 Countryway Blvd. in Tampa

    FREE

Native Floridian, storyteller and cracker cowboy Hank Mattson will enlighten and entertain by "Tellin' It Like It Was," about the life and times of hardy Florida cattlemen from the past and present.

Hank uses his own words and those of turn-of-the-century cow punchers to chronicle and preserve the life and times of the many Florida Folks who for over 400 years have been WORKIN' CATTLE. Hank charms his audiences with his poems and tales and complements his presentation with costume and props. He wants enthusiasts of cowboy lore to know that Florida was the birthplace of the cattle industry in America. Mr. Mattson is a member of the Florida Cattlemen's Association, the Professional Rodeo Hall of Fame Society and Friends of Florida Folk. He is the 2007 winner of the Laura Rider award for Florida folk poetry.

This program is presented in connection to Hillsborough Reads, which encourages members of the community to spend one month reading about Florida's past. Hillsborough Reads is a partnership program between the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library and the Tampa Bay History Center.

Free tickets available 30 minutes before the program. This program is funded by the Friends of Upper Tampa Bay Regional Library. For more information about this and other FREE programs @ your library®, call (813) 273-3652 or visit www.hcplc.org.
